Red Paw is an emergency response nonprofit organization founded by a Philadelphia firefighter that partners with the PFD and ARC to provide support following residential fires and disasters in Philadelphia. Red Paw raises money to provide the PFD CAT Team with emergency assistance supplies like leashes and carriers and training to help residents with pets. Services include supplies, pet hotel fees and resources for emergency medical care. *Please note that we do not provide boarding, long-term medical care or rehoming.
More than half of homes in the United States have at least two pets. 92% of pet owners consider their pets to be part of their family. Pet owners spend $70 billion a year on their pets. In the U.S. a fire department responds to a fire every 23 secs. 500k pets are affected by fires & sadly, 40k pets die in fires annually. Fire departments need to take citizens with pets into consideration when planning for and responding to residential fires and disasters in their communities.
We have 10 years of data to show that the services Red Paw provided during and following residential fires and disasters is not only necessary but invaluable for displaced individuals and families throughout the crisis cycle — from disaster through recovery. We believe that in order for these services to be sustainable and replicable in other cities, they must be implemented into every fire service.
